Does anyone bet on the likely winners of Fields Medals? I read in a history of the Cambridge Mathematics Tripos exam that there was massive public betting on the likely top-marked students in the exam in England during the 19th century. There were even stories of malfeasance, with staff at Cambridge colleges allegedly bribed by punters to make the leading candidates sick by contaminating their college meals in the week of the final exam.
