Math Stranger than Fiction
December 5th, 2006 by WaltI just saw the movie Stranger than Fiction, and I noticed a strange pattern in the last names of characters: Pascal, Hilbert, Escher, Cayley, Mittag-Leffler. Also, the main character’s favorite word is “integer”. The main character has a penchant for counting, but other than that the movie is as far removed from mathematics as can be imagined, so it’s all very mysterious.

I think that perhaps there is some relationship to the mathematical basis of philosophy and the “clockmaker” theorys of God (e.g. his life being managed by his watch). I just saw the film tonight and I haven’t really been able to put it all together yet.
