This is a pretty common problem in India. Most lay people view 'vedic mathematics' with great awe...you'll regularly hear parents telling their school kids to pick up one of the millions of vedic math books in every book shop to improve their math..while skipping over the courant and robbins that sit next to it. I've met many an engineer, finance professors, etc who think very highly of the scam. None of them have heard of Harish Chandra...its depressing.

If you look at the link for the course descriptions:
http://mum.edu/math_dept/descriptions.html

They are not as strange as some of the Titles. Except perhaps for the one on "Vedic Mathematics" which is to be expected.

I'm just surprised at the mostly normal descriptions of Mathematics when I expected much stranger.
