Speaking of famous conjectures that prove quite resilient, second-hands rumours at my institution say that Szpiro’s announced proof of the abc conjecture has a significant flaw. Note that those are rumours.

Here we are again, pushed to think that one has to come before the other. The chicken or the egg Q? Who ever it was that created this question was a mental masterbater. What was his or her name anyway? What if it all came at the same time. VERY COSMORGAMIC I say. Can you allow your mind to accept and reason with that? I just think that it screwed every modern day thinker the wrong way. It caused a mental challege that was not needed, to all you Intellegent MACHOS.

It looks like the “solve your favourite hard mathematical problem” season is wide open!

This is a bit off topic but I just would like to call your attention to a recent preprint (math.DG/0703136) with an alleged proof of the Hsiang-Lawson conjecture, a famous problem in differential geometry. A major breakthrough or just another fiasco?

After browsing the paper I should say that the above comments by Random (not i.i.d.) Thoughts are pertinent here, as the writing style is somewhat cumbersome, and the technical presentation certainly could be substantially improved.

Any opinion from an expert?
