I thought that I would let you know that the society is finally called “The Galois Group.” Thanks a lot for the suggestions.

(We are finally up and running now as well - and the first lecture was on Wednesday!)

Les Galoisiens sounds coolest - but only if you pronounce it correctly. You should only let people into the secret club room if they can pronounce it correctly.

Thanks for your replies. I had written everything up with the name ‘The Galois Group’ (As in his group and this group … ). Hmmm, I’ll add a footnote. (I can’t decide which one to choose from the three- it’s a name for a yet ‘imaginary’ maths society for students you see. )

Might as well try again- which would you think sounded ‘coolest’ for a maths society?

Can I ask a dumb question? (Please say yes!)

Oops too late- you see there is this group called ‘The Archimedeans’, but what would you call a group that, say you wanted to name after Galois? ‘The Galois Group’ or ‘Galoisians’ (which sounds rather duh!)? (Or can you think of another name which has Galois somewhere?)
