End of News Era

August 8th, 2007 by Walt

With all of the fuss being raised about academic publishing, I want to draw everyone’s attention to the fact that our nation’s most trusted news source has ceased publishing. One of its strengths was its science reporting. Most journalism features science’s success. They instead, featured all of the many mysteries of the world that science could not yet explain: aliens, Bigfoot, Bat-Boy. I speak of course of the Weekly World News.

In fact, the WWN did have excellent science reporting. Their articles on nutrition, and other “straight science” articles like one about a parrot who can count objects and understand various other complex grammatical constructs (cf Irene Pepperberg) were always accurate and fact checked. They did much better than rags like the New York TImes which, as many will attest, always get important stuff wrong in most science articles.
