I was able to get 7.04 running off the alternate CD but XWindows required a little extra help. This is our first time running Ubuntu although I have been running various flavors of Linux for over a decade. The jury is still out on this distro IMO. The catch is that to install ubuntu on my laptop I need to perform some incantations, in the form of options passed to the kernel (noapic, nolapic, noirqpoll, nosmp) or else the live cd won't run.
