In empirical research at its finest, this paper has investigated ratings at RateMyProfessors.com, and determined that mathematicians are not number one, either in easiness, or in hotness. (We’re also not 36th out of 36 in either — this honor is reserved for chemists in both categories.)
The average person who doesn’t (yet) require math to make their daily bread usually hates the subject. These people are still required to take math classes to graduate college in the US collegiate system and have lots of time to use RateMyProf to complain about their evil College Algebra teacher and how unfair having a basic curriculum for everyone is.
