Poincare Conjecture Settled?
July 27th, 2006 by WaltI see via Peter Woit that a new preprint by John Morgan and Gang Tian has appeared on arXiv, Ricci Flow and the Poincare Conjecture, which claims to offer a complete proof of the Poincare Conjecture, based on Perelman’s sketch. Huai-Dong Cao and Xi-Ping Zhu’s proof of the complete Geometrization Conjecture has been published in the Asian Journal of Mathematics, and is now available online as A Complete Proof of the Poincaré and Geometrization Conjectures - Application of the Hamilton-Perelman theory of the Ricci flow.

[...] Today’s Guardian, one of Britain’s leading national daily newspapers, has a front-page story and photo about Grigory Perelman’s proof of a generalization of the Poincare Conjecture. The article is more about the man than the mathematics, but I guess this is the price of a Page-1 story. [...]

[...] The big math story in 2006 was the publication of complete proofs of the Poincare conjecture, and subsequent events. In August, Grigori Perelman was awarded the Fields Medal for his role in the proof, which he turned down. At the same time the New Yorker published its famous article about Perelman and Shing-Tung Yau. [...]
