New laptop

November 14th, 2007 by Walt

I bought a new laptop yesterday. I thought my days of skulking around computer labs was over. But no, HP has managed to make a laptop that doesn’t support Linux. These days, you have to go out of your way to not support Linux. So now I have to take it back and try again.

I have a HP Pavillion from the dv6000 series. Ubuntu 7.10 works perfectly. Also, as I recall from the compatibility lists, I think you have to make an effort to choose a model that’s not supported.

The catch is that to install ubuntu on my laptop I need to perform some incantations, in the form of options passed to the kernel (noapic, nolapic, noirqpoll, nosmp) or else the live cd won’t run.

Walt, I’d email you this but I don’t know your email address. I’m desperately looking for a CoM host for 11/30. If you’re interested in hosting then, or even at a later date, please shoot me an email ASAP.

Walt’s new HP is from the dv6000 series and even with the boot options, I couldn’t get Ubuntu 7.10 running. I was able to get 7.04 running off the alternate CD but XWindows required a little extra help.

This is our first time running Ubuntu although I have been running various flavors of Linux for over a decade. The jury is still out on this distro IMO.
