Actually, the beauty of RSS (or atom) is that there is no cost associated with subscribing to an inactive feed (except for the few seconds your feed reader spends looking for updates). Contrast this to the method of visiting a web page to look for new posts: After seeing nothing new there for a week or two, most people would stop coming. But I am subscribed to RSS feeds where nothing happens for a year or more, and it doesn’t bother me one bit!
The term in Science Fiction Fandom is: GAFIA, an acronym for Getting Away From It All. From Fallen Angels by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle and Michael Flynn: “ ‘We heard you’d gafiated.’ ‘Fafiated.’ She looked him straight in the eye, daring him to disagree. She hadn’t gotten away from it all; she’d been forced away from it all.”
